Troubleshooting: Desktop Environment Issues

Graphical desktops span kernel drivers, user permissions, Wayland sockets, and IPC buses. When a desktop fails to launch, diagnosing the issue requires checking each layer sequentially.

1. Wayland Compositor Fails: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set

Symptom: Running sway from a TTY aborts immediately with:

[sway/main.c:380] XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is not set in the environment. Aborting.

Root Cause: The Wayland specification requires client-server communication to occur over UNIX domain sockets located in a secure, per-user memory filesystem (/run/user/<UID>). This directory is normally created automatically by pam_systemd.so during login.

Remedy: - If using systemd, ensure pam_systemd.so is enabled in /etc/pam.d/system-auth. - If using OpenRC / runit / BusyBox init, add this fallback logic to /etc/profile: sh if [ -z "$XDG_RUNTIME_DIR" ]; then export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR="/run/user/$(id -u)" if [ ! -d "$XDG_RUNTIME_DIR" ]; then mkdir -m 0700 -p "$XDG_RUNTIME_DIR" fi fi

2. GPU DRM / KMS Node Permission Denied

Symptom: Sway logs:

[wlr] [backend/drm/drm.c:89] Failed to open DRM device /dev/dri/card0: Permission denied

Cause: The logged-in user is not in the video or render group, and no active seat daemon (seatd or systemd-logind) granted device access.

Remedy: - Add the user to the video and render groups: bash # usermod -aG video, render <username> - Or verify that seatd is running and the user belongs to the seat group: bash # rc-service seatd start

3. Black Screen with Cursor in Virtual Machines (QEMU)

Symptom: Sway launches in QEMU, but only a blank black screen or frozen cursor appears.

Cause: QEMU was launched with basic VGA emulation (-vga std), which lacks hardware 3D acceleration, and Mesa’s software rasterizer (llvmpipe) is either missing or misconfigured.

Remedy: - Launch QEMU with modern VirtIO GPU acceleration: bash $ qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -m 4G -device virtio-vga-gl -display gtk,gl=on ... - Or force software rendering in your session: bash export WLR_RENDERER=pixman
