Exploring a Cargo Project Structure

Initialize a new project with Cargo:

cargo new desk_service --bin
cd desk_service

Standard Directory Layout

desk_service/
├── Cargo.lock       # Exact resolved dependency graph
├── Cargo.toml       # Manifest file: project metadata & dependencies
├── src/
│   └── main.rs      # Binary root entry point
└── target/ # Build artifacts and compilation cache (gitignored)

The Cargo.toml Manifest

[package]
name = "desk_service"
version = "0.1.0"
edition = "2024"

[dependencies]

The edition = "2024" flag configures the language edition. Rust guarantees backwards compatibility across editions through epoch-based stability.
